Thus far the apparatus of the state is still behind Putin although the move placing nuclear forces on high alert may horrify enough people to change that (and this could easily have unanticipated results).

    That's true. Now. However that was not true as recently as 2020. Prior to October, 2019 I was able to get on an insurance plan that covered PrEP at a reasonable cost for me (I'm not sure when I got on PrEP - certainly not before October 2018). However my insurance plan changed and insurance plans in the USA are opaque - the details in many cases are completely unclear. When the new plan kicked in and I ran out of PrEP, my refill was going to cost me over $5000 for a three month supply. I was stunned (and tried to get a picture of the cost). I in fact reported this fact to the Washington Blade for them to look into. I heard nothing back from them. Yet another reason why the ACA, while a step forward, is not even close to universal health care (I'd had true believer Democrats who have actually lived in countries that did have universal health care argue otherwise). The fact was that this was a policy change (and incredibly a policy change under a Nazi-leaning government [the Republicans under that grifter from Queens]). However the policy could be changed again and people could indeed have to pay the full cost for PrEP, since the USA is primarily about control, capitalism and homophobia.

    This tells you that something is really wrong - at 80% of the population vaccinated we should see a sharp decline in cases - basically plunging into next to nothing. However this is apparently not what we see (I'll have to look at the reported statistics for Ireland but the fact that such a large percentage of the population is vaccinated AND there are still a large number of cases would normally be utterly contradictory). Basically at 60% of the population vaccinated we should see a sharp decline in symptomatic cases. This has been a general rule of thumb for all previous epidemics/pandemics. (everything I wrote above is basic, entry level, 101, biostatistics - COVID19 is rewriting the textbooks with this behavior) It's not clear how these two facts can co-exist. One explanation is that the vaccines are far less effective than reported - but actually we can control outbreaks with vaccines that are "underpowered" - this is the general case with flu vaccines. In a backward place like the USA with a tremendous pool of people who refuse to get vaccinated this fact can be overlooked (since we are hovering at 60% of the population vaccinated one could say that they might expect cases to begin to plummet and explain away the 60% limit on the basis of the massive infectiousness of COVID19 - but in places where substantially more than 60% of the population is fully vaccinated AND one does not see cases plummeting - then we know that something is off. Have Irish epidemiologists addressed this exact question?

    Went on a trip to NYC Saturday, 10-30-21. I took advantage of the times before and after my meeting during the trip to check out the ESC.
