Training is an excellent idea.  I used my ex-wife's dildos quite a bit before I took the plunge, so when it finally happened I knew what sensations to expect and it was pretty easy for me to relax and take it.   It really helps if the top starts slowly, working the head in a bit at a time.  Done right and with proper lube it shouldn't hurt at all.
