Okay, Explain: Why does “On My Way” also mean the opposite?

I have had the exact same thing happened to me recently, with an ‘on my way’ message followed by a cancellation ten minutes later; another time with an ‘on my way,’ then ‘10 minutes away’ message, then silence, with their distance remaining constant. He then asked several hours later if I have gotten any loads—I blocked he.  I began to ponder why people do this and I do agree with @partying.hard that men get a kick out of the idea of having sex with you, perhaps even jerking off at sending such messages, without the intention of leaving their couch. 

I confess that in the early days of internet porn, maybe ten or fifteen years ago, I would sometimes ask guys to send their dick pic and save it in a folder. If they asked to meet, I would say something like, “Yeah, that sounds like a hot idea,” without actually intending to go. I then went on to fantasied about hot sex with them in my head, with their dick pic on hand. Forgive me 🙏
I never went because I was shy at the time, self-conscious of my appearance, and PREP wasn’t around so fear of stealthing and catching HIV.

But they don't have to think about that part - they never have any intention of hooking up, so they have the memory of feeling desired and that's all that matters. Some of these guys are married or in relationships and can't ever "do" anything so this is just masturbation fodder for them, and there's ALWAYS someone else down the road they can con into giving them what they need.
