The creation of independent content, pioneered by sites like X-Tube (may it rest in peace), revolutionized adult film. My biggest problems with adult film I grew up with in the 1990's was: very formulaic: some scene setting with (usually) badly delivered dialogue, kissing, from every imaginable angle, sucking from every imaginable angle, and eventually, fucking in 3 different positions from every imaginable angle. The fast forward button as often utilized since each section went on way longer than needed. I also found much of the 'porn music' to distract from the scene rather than enhance it. Independent and amateur content changed all that.  The scenes became shorter where they needed to be, the style gave it a more documentary in-the-moment feel rather than slickly produced in a studio. The sound was the actual sounds of the guys in the film, not overdubbed grunts and moans added in post that often didn't synch up to what you were seeing on film. And, thankfully, none of that "porn music."  In the end, the studios had to bend to that style because it proved more popular. Independent filming also opened the door for something other than 20 year old muscle jocks with big cocks. Now you can get films with bears and dad/coach types, and every imaginable kink beyond vanilla fucking--like fisting and sounding and pup play.

Now, all that said, some independent/amateur video is better executed than others. In my experience as a adult film maker, having at least one camera man who can move about is essential to really capturing the moment and give a feel of something beyond "hey let's film with our phone camera and prop it up on the nightstand." Good lighting is essential. You do want some good camera angles but you need motion too. You want the viewer to feel like he is in on the action rather than a passive observer from afar, making camera movement and zoom abilities essential to help create that sensation in the viewer. The sound is genuine, not dubbed or drowned out by annoying music, so you want to make sure you have a good microphone to capture the grunts and moans--and even the dialogue--clearly.  And yes, as one poster already noted, we are clearly having a great time when we film, even if it means five non-stop hours of sex, because we are enjoying every piggy second of it.  The first film I ever did was a group scene, the director said to everyone before we started "remember, you are having sex. Sex is supposed to be fun and enjoyable so that should be the expression your face and body give to the camera. I don't want to see any scowls or bored looks. It should be 'smiles everyone, smiles.'" That direction has stayed with me through every film I've done and if you're really into having sex like I am, the bliss filled smile comes naturally. (p.s. There are few professional films that I find good. The acting is bad and takes me out of it, regardless of how hot it may look. Homemade vids are my choice.

I am not sure that I can reduce this to a “versus” issue.  There are good and bad aspects to both products. There is a lot of professional porn that I really like. Admittedly, most of what I like in the 70s and 80s and 90s. The Matt Stirling films, for instance. Films like “Killing Me Softly” which was a pornographic suspense/thriller, or “Gold Rush Boys,” a pornographic comedy. Or the spectacularly georgeous “Desert Train.” But then, you do have to deal  with a lot of incredibly bad porn music. Anybody remember Jeff Stryker’s first film in which he actually sang an entire song on stage before thousands before stepping out into an alley to have sex with a fan?  Unintentionally funny.

 

I enjoy homemade porn, too, and I confess I’ve shot some. (Haven’t we all?) .  Myself, I hate music in amateur vids, but some guys seem to think they’re hotter if they moan and groan in time to Brittany Spears or the latest bimbo-de-jour. It’s not hot - it’s just annoying. Additionally, The  lighting can be bad, and too often the action isn’t framed well. And then there are those guys who can’t resist “acting” their way through the scene, like they were auditioning for something. Yet, when it’s good there’s a sense of immediacy, even urgency, to it, almost like looking through someone’s window or lurking in their darkened closet. 

It’s been said before that ninety percent of everything is crap. The adventure lies in searching for something -anything- that gets your dick up and off, be it pro porn or amateur (they call it amateur for a reason, you know). Enjoy what you like. Myself, I prefer the written word. The action is a lot hotter in my head.

I grew up with porn in the 70s and 80s. Pre-AIDS not a condom to be seen as those were simply not used. But horrible music drowning out the the natural sounds of guys having sex. some hot guys though. Then condoms appeared and you simply adapted because that was the new norm. I really enjoyed the Titan and Raging Stallion movies. Joe Cage movies. Storyline and hot men. Men at Play (hot suited guys), UK Naked Men and so on. Joey Stefano was a role model 😉

enjoyed the sterling era films, despite the music. joe gage's great flicks. the music really is irritating at times.  and in amateur vids, there is often music in the background; if it is a 'str8' guy who has been lured to make a movie, there is usually het sex vid in the background, which is very annoying. as for amateur vids,t hey are often better, unless there is a puppy whimpering in the background or large trucks running by every few minutes. often in the homemade stuff, the top actually comes IN the ass...not the prof vids where they pull out, shoot on the bottom's ass, then plunge back in.

Sure amateur porn has it's upside.  More variety of guys, less over production like dialogue and the ability to hear the guys and their honest comments.

What I dislike, is the one angle camera view.  It is best when someone is hired to hold the camera and move it along just like the guys move across the bed, or sofa, or room, you get where I am going with this.  There are some OF videos that will do this, but they are the exception rather than the rule.  I have seen the backs of guys who unknowingly block the camera because there is little space between the camera and the bed.  This takes away from the overall video, and I don't know about you, but someone suddenly having to stop fucking to get another iPhone involved is really frustrating.

I think it's great we get to see new faces, great bodies and groups of hot men who actually look like they want to be there, and look like they actually like each other.  In the past some professional porn featured performers that I knew for a fact did not like each other.  So why did the studios force them to participate?  At least with amateur porn it doesn't appear that the participants are unhappy with being there, just their video skills leave something to be desired.  I am not beating up on them, but whoever put together that video shoot should probably hire a friend or video buff with the job of holding the recording devices so we don't miss the best scenes with some incredibly hot men.
