They're not heroes, despite them being there for non-traditional man-woman marriages. 2) Bill Clinton was poised to allow open service in the military when the conservatives in Congress--some Democrats, but nearly every Republican--insisted that he not. As a compromise, Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue became a thing. Just for some background, I was in the service at the time. I had some friends come out right after Clinton made his announcement who then got kicked out because they violated DADT. It's shitty, but the shit isn't from Clinton. The shit is from conservatives. So, because I'm currently a data scientist, and taught math in a previous lifetime (and am therefore a pedant), this isn't an exponential equation it's basically quadratic. I think it's important to understand that Republicans have been trained that facts don't matter more than their feelings. I'm sure he feels abortion is riskier than pregnancy. It was reality before 2015, which is really only 7 years ago. One partner would die, even with a will, the family would contest and win, and kick the grieving partner out of their home. Gay parents who had kids in previous marriages were denied custody or even visitation. Republicans are aggrieved because they can't keep doing all that. Just having to not punish people they consider less than them is enough cause.

Imagine going on a road trip from Denver to Seattle and being married in Colorado, legal strangers in Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho, and married again when you get into Oregon and Washington. What happens if you get in an accident in one of the intervening states and the hospital righteously denies you hospital visitation or even any information on the status of your husband-in-other-states-but-not-shitty-Republican-states? What happens if they instead call his family for permission for medical procedures because you're not related to him and can't make decisions. They're Republicans. The cruelty is the point. Abortion is far more safe than pregnancy, especially for poor women. Also, a bunch of fetal abnormalities are not seen until after the first trimester. In those cases bearing and giving birth is harder on the pregnant person and at best leaves an infant to struggle in pain until it inevitably dies. I’m not pro-unnecessary pain and suffering. It should be left to the pregnant person to decide with medical advice from their physician.

So just having a Secretary of Education sitting on student loan forgiveness for victims of fraud is net positive. Allowing trans people to exist without harassment is net positive. "Moving is expensive," is not a reason to not have an exit plan. Felonies are expensive. You lose access to most high-end jobs; you lose your vote; you'll probably have to register as a sex offender, further limiting where you can live. I live in Colorado, and it's probably safe, but I've still got a friend in the PNW who I can bolt and live with while getting re-established. I know what goes if all I can take is what fits in the car, and what gets packed and shipped if I need to fly out because I'm surrounded by New Mexico and a whole shitload of jackass states.
