Although im no longer on Prep I had some dental surgery done and it showed up on a meds list of mine.  The dentist asked what my VL is.

My question is Descovy used not only as HIV prevention  but treatment also?

Similar experience with Truvada when I was hospitalized recently. A doctor came in all concerned that they needed to make sure I was getting it, and I had to explain that it was prophylactic and there was no need, given that I wasn't going to be having sex in the hospital. Though one of the LPN's was mighty tempting...

Yes, they are used for treatment, along with other drugs (though not often, given the availability of combination pills).

I have been using Descovy along with Prezcobix for a number of years and now my viral load is almost undetectable.

One thing I wanted to mention is that I have had a bunch of outpatient procedures and in each case a nurse from the hospital contacted me to go over my list of medications prior to showing up at the hospital. Granted they seem to have everything I am taking or have taken in the past few years.

But one question I was asked the last time was this - are you taking Descovy for Prep or for Infection. I answered for infection and the nurse just moved on down the list.

So I think the medical field, even those that don’t deal with patients with HIV or AIDS on a routine basis, are aware that the drug can be used for both purposes.

i found Descovy to be easily used, i had little or no side effects to that medication.

The assistant seemed more knowledgeable and asked if it was for prevention!  Even though I'm not currently on it i said yes

To the PrEP, at first, I was slightly a bit more "regular" than before, but that settled down fairly quickly.

But, I eat a pretty healthy, varied diet anyway ... there's only one (excuse for) food that I simply will not eat.

AFAIK PreP meds use part of full HIV treatment. (There was a ton of research done and trials on this.)
Full HIV treatment is a combination of meds (though they may be in a single pill like Atripla.)

Dentists are very poorly trained, both in what the varied clinical uses of Truvada and Descovy are, and in how to communicate and ask questions about them. I went to the UW Dental School clinic and they assumed I was HIV+ after seeing Descovy in my meds (even though it wasn't in my history) and when I explained that it was used for PrEP and how it worked they had no idea about it and didn't believe me.

I spoke to one of the supervising instructors and told them that the students need to be better educated for their clinical work? Also, how was it that the UW Student Health people hadn't educated their students about PrEP as an personal option for all sexually active students?
