‘Although we use the term sounding, what you are actually doing is dilating. (Sounding is actually measuring width and depth). Dilating can cause bleeding and often does when doing it medically. There can be multiple reasons. A stricture, sharp edge, to aggressive , to big. If it’s a bumbling out, go to the doctor. If it’s a little blood in urine or semen and you can P ok. Not so much an emergency. Drink plenty of water and keep an eye on it. If it gets difficult or painful, then see the doctor.
Usually, when we dilate in the clinic we know there is an obstruction, so we put a Foley catheter in. If we are just sounding to identify stricture we don’t
drink plenty of water, unless you start passing clots And can’t P you should be ok. There is an infection risk but if you are taking precautions you should be ok. But when in doubt, your friendly urology practitioner can be your friend.
