I live in Manhattan and am in the same demographic as the main characters (40-something, affluent, gay professional that enjoys sex parties and experiences the tensions of having a partner who doesn’t). It’s obviously heightened for comedic effect, but it seemed realistic for that very limited demographic, noted above. Obviously the majority of gay men in New York don’t live like that, but some of us do. I didn’t buy the actual sex scenes. The physical geometry of fucking somebody in missionary doesn’t work that way. As two gay men the actors would have known that, but they were probably toning it down for a mainstream audience. However it was nice to hear such frank and explicit dialogue, i.e., a hot masculine guy saying, “I want you to fuck me.”

While not stereotypically effeminate, I definitely come across as metrosexual (e.g., like Will from Will & Grace) and most people outside of a major city would probably assume I’m gay.

Because of PrEP, I would say the majority of gay sex in major metropolitan areas in the U.S. is bareback nowadays. And that sex comes in all shapes, sizes and flavors. As viking noted, the posts on this site are not representative of most gay sex. Breeding and humiliation are not the same and you can easily have one without the other. Personally I find breeding and being bred liberating and empowering and those are the encounters that I seek out.

The actual bathhouses in New York are lame, but the city has good semi-private parties. If you want a proper bathhouse experience with steam rooms, etc., I think Philly is better.

Sounds like he was too nervous to play and probably went home to jack off. He was probably just checking out the scene. I know several guys that have been to bathhouses but have never done anything, mainly out of fear of catching an STI or being seen by someone they know. Not everyone is open to casual sex as we are (unfortunately).

I’ve known a number of single gay men that bought beautiful small homes in rural areas (Upstate New York, Connecticut, and Western Virginia, respectively) for retirement. Unfortunately they didn’t know anyone in the area and became so bored and miserable that they each ended up moving back to the city within a year.

Anonymous groups are always hit-or-miss. I find an 80 percent no-show rate is pretty average. Not sure the venue affects it, but obviously the more convenient the better.

An empty bathhouse is incredibly boring and rather depressing. I would focus on peak times when there’s likely to be action and get a cheap hotel room for impromptu hookups off the apps for the slower times. -

Play it by ear and be flexible. You’re into a lot so it shouldn’t be a problem. Every venue has slow nights, but if it’s a place known for having glory holes, you should be able to get some loads. It’s not hard to figure out who are the pig sluts in places like that. No secret codes required.
