The hanky code is not used as much as it used to be, however if you are going to the Tool Shed or Barracks in Palm Springs you will see guys still flagging. So what do you flag. Color then left top, right bottom. Tradition is to flag the hanky in your back pocket, but you can also use armbands. 

I’m:  Black L/R, Yellow R, Red L/R, Navy R, Light blue R, Pink L, Purple R, Grey R, Teal L/R

I’m not sure the hanky code was every used to as full an extent as that in the real world, for the very reason that it became over-complicated.  And what if you are into several of the fetishes listed at once, or versatile? Or at a naked event?

However, I do think a more widely recognized code that simply designates top, bottom or versatile would be extremely helpful in a cruise bar/sex club environment- it would save so much time and so many awkward encounters!

This was big in the 70's..started out with just a few, by the mid 90's I remember getting a card at a venue in San F with about 60 various combinations..a read head spinner and at the Eagle on sundays there was a shower of colours. A great spinner for the sellers.

I always wear a leather wrist wallet when in sex clubs and always on my right wrist. Most guys I've encountered seem to realise the significance.

Left = top

Right = bottom

Or how I always remembered it, Right = receive 

It mostly works for me anyhow and if I see a guy with one on each wrist I've always gone with that he's vers.

Leathermen and leatherwomen still use this. I can go to any such fetish event or gathering, and see a variety of colours and interests. It's gone beyond just hankies, and now appears as leather shirts (or it's a black shirt with ____ colour piping), or ties when we go high cow (that's full dress leathers for those who don't know the lingo), and other ways.

A bit of advice on multiple interests: don't flag more than three colours. My late husband - may he rest in peace until I get there! - stitched together five colours into one hanky. A clever idea, but it backfired because it was too confusing to others. He was so advised by a leather bar owner.

If you want to flag a poz interest, get yourself a hanky with biohazard symbols all over it. Or carry one of those biohaz bags from the hospital in your back pocket. Left would mean "is poz", right would mean "wants poz". 

There's a much larger list for all kinds of interests somewhere on the internet, some you can't even imagine.

A couple different colors were tried for barebacking (one was navy blue with white dots. I don't remember the other) but they never caught on though once or twice I got fucked raw for wearing them to the Eagle here in New York. Both times, the person had to ask me what the hanky design meant however so it was not well known even on "flag" night. This was about 2014 or so. The code was fairly well kown by all  in the 70's and early 80's when it was introduced but it was much simpler. Still there were about 15 different colors and it was expected that you knew ever one of them. I was and am: navy blue R; black R; yellow L/R; Red L; Light blue L/R; White no; Orange L though currently R during the COVID era; Kelly Green was L now R; Pink and purple not so much; Grey R (I could never do knots) and teal L/R; dark pink (tit torture) L/R

Hanky Code is rampant in many different colors but I have see the Red Cross used with left meaning POZ and right negative.

The Trans community has added so many colors today.

Quite correct on black & white check. Cream I understood to mean "cums in condoms" on th eleft and "sucks cum out of condoms" on the right. I can see "sucks cum out of condoms" could be interpreted as barebacker but gut reaction I would have to seeing someone with a condom (opened, I presume) in his pocket is just to avoid that person.

That should remove any doubt. I like your thinking. It beats certainly beats walking up and down like a zombie. I never did that but I saw others who did. 🤥 I will try that when we are free to move about again.
