Indeed, but depending on what you mean by "old", it's important to remember that probably the majority of those who were big in the 1980's and 1990's are now dead.

I tend to disagree that porn stars from the 80s or 90s are all necessarily dead.  I know for a fact that many from Raging Stallion are still alive, many living in different parts of California.  I know based on conversations with those living in San Francisco, who worked as custodian of records for some of the major porn studios, that these guys survived the AIDS epidemic, as well as a multitude of other causes that might have ended in an early death.  Many still work in ordinary 40 hour a week jobs, some are on disability, but they are alive. I won't mention names but one in particular recently sold his entire only fans catalog to a streaming service.  So yes, they are out there.

The vast majority of the underground gay porn which was being actually filmed was happening in France and Germany in the 20's, with some home made ones in Portugal and today's Algeria. At the beginning of 30's, with the advent of slightly more available cameras, the production started moving to California and Mexico. However, very few reels actually survived - probably less than a dozen. A few of them survived in France and are now part of national archives owned by the state. Easiest to get a copy of them would be to enrol in a summer student program at CNAM in Paris which gets you access to the archives. I was curious some 20 years ago and did that. There is nothing obscene anymore in these movies. There was a lot of tender love, kissing, touching, Men didn´t shave their pubes, but nicely trimmed. Quite different from the bushy ones you would see in the straight version of the same era. The plot was skipped, or at least not available on these reels. Other than that, same action as today, with the obviously less enhanced visuals and less detail. In a sense it was quite nostalgic to view these movies. 

Almost all actors in porn movies in Germany were killed by the nazis. Those in France, who survived, took refuge in Portugal and in Mexico - maybe the catholic church lent them a hand? pun intended:-)

When the 40's arrive, the war didn´t leave much room for any porn production. It only re-started in the 50's in France and spread out to California. From then on, it's easier to trace the evolution of porn, both gay and straight, on film. 

There are however a number of photographs that survived. I am told that many are in private collections. 

Being on camera today, filming porn, gay or straight, is no longer the adventure or risk it once was.

I had plenty of VHS tapes from the ‘70’s, ‘80’s, and ‘90’s. I was told that they had no value so they went into the trash. 

I did loom online as to what to do with them. Some of the better responses:

- put them in a trash can at a playground 

-drop them in the book return at the public library 

-leave them in a basket on the doorstep of a Catholic Church 

-drop them off at a Boy Scout Camp

-leave them in a box at the entrance to a gay bar

They lied to you if they told you they had no value.  That shit is worth solid gold on ebay or really anywhere.  Submit it to the internet archive, that's stuff is real treasure.

Well, unless the trash guys opened one of the 3 large boxes, they are in a landfill now. They went out with old issues of magazines — two boxes full of Drummer, Honcho, Men, and a few miscellaneous others.

Personally, all you need to do is just get a pair of scissors and cut them, and they are then unviewable.  But why destroy them?  In many major cities there are places that will transfer vhs and even home movies onto CDs. I would not throw away great classic porn from that era, it could be worth something someday.  You would be surprised how many guys out there yearn to see videos from that time period and will pay you good money for your collection.  I wouldn't just throw them away, if you are uncomfortable taking cash than just give them to someone who has an interest.  It takes them out of your hands and responsibility,

Now that's how we got all our porno mags when I was a kid. Someone invariably threw them out in some big pile of trash, and one time they did pick up a pretty big haul by my elementary school. Nothing collectible, but stuff like Cheri, Oui, Jugs, any other C or D-List mag you can imagine was barely worth the paper stock that the chick's pussy was splayed out in. I have a box or two of porn mags from the mid/late 80s and early 90s, mostly twink stuff, Playguy, In Touch, Blueboy, etc.  It hasn't seen the light of day in a long time but I never got rid of it.

I had literally hundreds of dubbed VHS tapes of the same genre (including a lot of bareback Cadinot), but when the husband moved in, he was jealous of that and made me give them away to a friend of mine, who, unfortunately, didn't take very good care of them.  I know he still has some of them, but I don't know how well they would play.  It's a shame.  Fortunately I was able to hide the magazines away and keep them myself. :)

Well, I would’ve taken the magazines off your hands. I wrote fiction for all three of those magazines you mentioned, as well as others. I worked my way through college partly, if you could call that work, and trained myself as a writer by producing porn stories For the various Gay rags when the mags actually paid money. I still prefer well written porn to almost all videos.

But I also have probably a couple of boxes of VHS pornography in my office storage room. I was a huge fan of Matt Sterling videos particularly. Amusingly my office storage room also had the furnace in one corner and  I was contracted with a furnace company to come out twice a year to clean it and check it. My boxes of porn were always close by and I would usually find they had been shuffled through when the contractor left.  Every now and then I think about having those transferred into DVD format.

There were some interesting stories in the 70s and earl 80s, pre-condom days when story values were as important as dick-size, that I hope have been preserved somewhere. One I particularly recall involved a serial killer in San Francisco. It was called KILLING ME SOFTLY, I think.  I haven’t  seen it in many years, but it was a solid production in a lot of ways.
