Saunas verses Hook-ups

Hi folks

I'm interested in your thoughts between bath houses/saunss, verses 'hook-ups' (eg Grinda etc)?   What is your preference?  What, in your experience/opinion, are the pros and cons of both?

Give me a bathhouse every time. Real contact with real Men, everyone’s there for the same reason, and none of the ills caused by internet communication apply. Men can’t misrepresent themselves very well when they’re naked. And I love me a steamroom. Getting steamed at guys who flake me on Grindr in nowhere near as pleasurable.

Plus, I’ve never, ever left a bathhouse unfucked. I can’t say that about a hotel room where I had to rely on the apps to bring in hookups.

To me, every format of cruising in person, be it sauna, bathhouse, restroom, park, ABS, etc., beats out internet aps every time.

i suspect there's a whole segment of guys who are on aps who never show up at a physical hook up site, i.e flakes who have no intention of hooking up in the first place? idk, probably isn't 100% the case, but i think there are guys who are afraid and just fantasizing on aps that either aren't ready or never had any intention of actually going through with sex. i have had guys get scared at cruising places, but not nearly like aps. I still love the simplicity of the video arcade, too. The anonymity and cruising aspect of it, the voyeuristic aspect, and especially the "dirty secret" aspect of it where the "DL" guys go in.

It depends. Going to the bathhouse here in YYC is hit or miss in terms of scoring a hot guy to breed. It's also pretty expensive here with membership plus room rate. If in terms of cost savings, for exactly the same amount of money, you could book a cheap motel room and line up loads way more comfortably, efficiently and reliably by advertising your anon session on grindr, doublist, scruff, etc You can even get lucky and score some unbelievably hot guys (yes, I sneak a peek out the window to check out some of my breeders.) I like the bathhouse, have been many times and I consider it as basically a gay institution, a tradition. good question. The number of times when i have arranged to meet a guy on line and i have come away thinking 'that was amazing' is not many. A lot less than the guys i have met in saunas where they have really done the job. That may reflect my age, my body, my kinks... and sure I have had some sauna sauna sessions which have been a total waste of time. But some sauna guys are real spunk machines. I have very strong opinions on the bath house vs. private hook ups comparisons.  I used to work in Ft Lauderdale and had access to the bath houses there 24 hours a day.  I can say they always provided immediate gratification.  First point, there was no concern about if an individual looked like his pics and was indeed who he said he was.  There was always a variety of men to select.  If you were disappointed for some reason with the first choice there was always the opportunity to find a second, a third or a fourth.

With the advent of online sites like barebackrt or a4a or any of the others, I found it amusing that my inbox lit up right around the time people came home from bar and clubs (when there were bars and clubs).  Now with phone apps it somewhat the same, you wait for the first notification, and you go through the routine of exchanging x pics, deciding who will host, and most important - WHEN?  With bath houses (or saunas) I can say there is no question as to when, because it will be NOW, or you move along to the next guy.

I no longer live or work in a city with a bathhouse or sauna. I now have to rely on websites and telephone apps and at times it can be a bit of crap-shoot.  Will he look like his pictures, will it be safe to have him in my place or at his place, will he suddenly cancel, etc.

I miss the baths, the convenience, the GUARANTEE.

I think it’s one of those “your mileage may vary” situations with bathhouses vs. hotel hosting, dependent on the size of the available population of potential candidates for fucking - a factor I think of as ‘critical mass’.

Louisville, God bless it, does not reach critical mass. It’s simply not a big enough city. It’s big enough to have a bathhouse, but I haven’t been back there in years because I’ve never been fucked there more than once in a visit. To be fair, I always got fucked, but the patronage was simply too sparse. Compare that with the bathhouse I go to in Indianapolis, where activity can be quite brisk at times. Indy has enough men to reach critical mass, even with two competing bathhouses.

Its critical mass in terms of app hookup results, however, is only marginally better than Louisville’s. I think that in order to be able to really pull men in successfully and reliably with hotel hosting, the critical mass of available men needs to be greater by something like an order of magnitude. I found it fairly easy, for instance, to drum up interest in Atlanta (the 8th most populous metro area in the US) versus Louisville (43rd most populous). If you’re in a place like NYC, there’s so much meat on the hoof there’s no comparison.

Also, consider the effect of the social climate - a place like NYC or San Francisco, or even Chicago are going to be places where the view of sex is much more libertine than the Bible Belt South or the conservative Midwest where activity is more furtive, hesitant and clandestine. The repressive atmosphere has much to do, I think, with the failure of apps to produce live results here in the hinterlands of Butt Fucking Egypt.
