It’s not something that happens often, but a few times in a bathhouse it’s happened to me. It would be good news to hear Poztop9 is at the ESC. The bathhouse video mentioned, progresses from the room to a liquor stocked bar. The ESC barely has a working candy machine. I was there 8 hours from midnight until 8 am sat/sun ass up with the door open. I got fucked once. Most of the room doors are closed, the place was packed, and there was almost no action anywhere. The upstairs floor, where I’ve heard the most pnp happened, is roped off and not available. Remember when they started roping off the downstairs at the WSC? It was months before they shut down forever. No one who runs the ESC wants you to enjoy your stay, they want to take your money and see you leave in disgust. I see torn up temporary membership cards on the floor by the exit every time I go. It’s very hard to convince any New Yorker to meet you there. -
It is really hard for me to believe a theatre of any kind would allow smoking, even if short staffed.

I had no idea how much history was behind Man’s Country in Chicago. I was last there in 2004 and suddenly that’s 20 years ago and even the building’s gone. Chicago is very lucky to have Steamworks but I enjoyed them both when i was last in that town.

Impressive that you had one open last year, and you have so many options. Was one of them formerly a Club Baths? Consider yourself fortunate, New York City has only one option and it always feels on the verge of closing. I remember swimming naked in an outdoor pool at some club in Florida. It was great.

Steamworks is the only recent group that I’m aware of. The one in Chicago is heaven. There is, I believe, one in To4onto and one in Berkeley. When a bathhouse owner ages he has no family to inherit the business. This happened to Man’s Country in Chicago, it went more and more into disrepair and is now demolished. There is no legacy fir these places and unless we work to make new ones viable, they will just vanish.

Man’s Country was on East 15th Street, it was notable for having a full size truck on one of its floors to approximate the real experience of the docks on the other side of town. It closed early under the treat of AIDS, but for a few years, like 1976, it was there.

I’ve never heard of German bathhouses. Yes they have horse fair and Lab in Berlin, and back rooms at bars but I haven’t heard of bathhouses talked about before. Where are they? Which cities? How recently has anyone visited them? I think the whole concept is on the decline in the States and the last time I was in the UK, I didn’t feel they were very active there.
