    I don't think you did anything wrong at all. I also think the presence of his friends there in the same building may have to do something with his reaction. I've often heard that we spend our time in high school (and from what you describe he is pretty close to that age) trying to fit in, and the rest of our lives trying to stand out. He may still be in that trying to fit in stage and more worried about what his friends would think while simultaneously trying to find way to be a slut like I think he probably wants to be. I wouldn't be surprised if you see him there again very soon. If you do, try to be the helpful mentor that many of us never got growing up. Talk to him if you can, ask if you did anything wrong, listen to him and don't be too surprised if it ends up being him apologizing to you for acting like a scared little kitten. It's sometimes hard to remember what it's like to be that age after living a life and having the hindsight of a lived life. Try to remember all of those things that we all go through at his age which seemed monumental back then but we barely remember now.

    I was a high school junior and 17 years old. For the first time, my parents were going to leave me by myself for a weekend and I was not going to waste a chance at doing something I was in a big hurry to do. I knew an older guy who told me he'd take out to 'the bars' whenever I wanted to go. Once I knew the dates my parents would be gone, we started making plans. The older guy was maybe 27, at most, who I had met in a mall bathroom with a glory hole. The bar was called Keys (at the first location), at E 9th and Bolivar, in Cleveland, OH. I remember being most worried about being asked for an ID but I was tall and cute and for some reason they never asked. The bar itself was a small cocktail bar and it was, by far, the most glamorous place I had ever been to in my life. It was decorated in that 1980's postmodern style with shiny black lacquer furniture and dramatic lights pointing at glam floral arrangements and at framed Patrick Nagel prints hanging on the walls. I remember saying to my friend that the next time we came, I should bring cigarettes in order to look more cool. He told me how to ask the bartender for a drink, and the only drink name I could think of was one I'd heard on TV and thought sounded very sophisticated, a 7 & 7. I didn't really like but drank it down anyway. After we left Keys, my friend drove us around downtown Cleveland and pointed out where the other bars and baths were located. Since no one was expecting me at home I went back to my older friend's trailer (yes, a trailer) and he fucked my brains out. We fucked around for a few more weeks but we never went back to the bars together again. I did run into him again a year or so later at the bathhouse where I was becoming a regular. but that's another story.

    I had that happen a few years ago. It was summertime and I was wearing baggy shorts and a jock strap.     I was 1984, I was 18, a summer weeknight evening, and my job as a lifeguard had left me with a a golden brown tan that made me feel very confident in my looks. I was at the local mall and had just bought an ice cream cone when I saw a sexy, very tall guy, like myself, with equally dark bronzed skin and a big nose which has skwsys been a huge weakness for me.     Back in the early 90's, before any real effective HIV medications, I was diagnosed with HIV. I was just 25. I thought for sure I wouldn't live to see 30.. I was scared, depressed, and terrified of anyone finding out about my diagnosis. After getting my positive test result at the health department I made an appointment with my family doctor, a gay man himself. I was sitting in the examination room at his office, almost embarrassed to be there when he walked in. He shut the door, nodded, gave me a small smile and asked me to stand up. When I did he took a step or two toward me and hugged me and told me it would be alright. I cried and he kept holding me. I eventually composed myself and we talked about my prognosis and how he was very hopeful about medications coming down the pike. That hug was the best thing he could have done for me that day. I will never forget how much it meant and helped me. Don't be afraid of being a human being when you break the news to this young man. It may be what he needs most.

    You deserve better. It can be a pain to find a doctor you're comfortable with who isn't judging you or even just seeming to judge you. You are most likely less willing to be completely honest with your current one, no? Completely understandable but also one of the reasons you need to find one you can be honest with, one who is just as open and nonjudgemental back. I'm in the medical field and can say there are a lot of really great, nonjudgemental doctors out there, gay and straight alike. There are also a few duds that we all need to avoid as much as possible. Good luck on your search for a better doctor for you.
