    I had to be taken off Tenofivir because it was affecting my kidney function. My doctor told me that there aren't that any other single drug options for prep and he had to put me on a regular Hiv regiment which usually adds a second class of drugs on top of the drugs usually given for prep. The combo he put me on is Epzicom and Edurant, both are kidney friendly but the only drawback with Epzicom is that you have to be tested to make sure you don't have a certain gene variation called HLA-B*5701. If you have it, you cannot use the drug as people with that gene mutation end up having life threatening reactions to it. It's worked well for me and my kidney function has improved and I've had no side effects from the regiment and I've been on it for six years now, so you might want to see if your doctor is open to it.

    I have to agree that Treasure Island has gone downhill. It used to be my primary source for porn and I own quite a few movies. So if you wanted to try to buy a policy to cover nursing home expenses, most insurers would deny you immediately and deem you uninsurable. The insurance industry has been reluctant to get with the times and acknowledge that HIV is no longer a killer disease but a manageable medical condition with normally expected life spans if managed properly.

    My advice for anyone on prep is to watch your kidney function carefully. After 5 years of Truvada, my kidney function started a rapid decline that continued for about a year before I finally demanded to be seen by a nephrologist. He took me off of ALL of my medications for a month including the Truvada and my kidney function slowly started to bounce back. He had my doctor take me off Truvada altogether and put me on a more kidney friendly drug regiment that was not a normal course of Prep. It took almost two years for my kidneys to return to barely in the normal range and they've been bouncing slightly in and out of normal range since. I understand that there is a class action lawsuit against Gilead because they knew of the danger of Truvada to kidneys and also because they had a more kidney-safe version developed but didn't want to release it before the patent on Truvada ran out. I'm posting this for everyone because as I mentioned, my kidney function was pretty stable until the sudden and rapid decline, so keep an eye on your labs.

    California has already lowered the penalty for knowingly transmitting HIV from a felony to a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in prison. I believe they said said the bill was designed to “modernize” the law in line with advancements in medical treatment for HIV and changing social perceptions of the disease. I know that there are strong opinions on each side but I believe that some form of modernization was needed now that HIV is not the killer disease that it once was.
