In the course of face-to-face in-depth interviews, participants were asked what led them to have their first bareback experience as well as to continue with the behavior. Qualitative analysis identified the pivotal role that sexual pleasure and intimacy have in this population and how drives for sexual satisfaction, adventure, intimacy, and love overpower health concerns and condom use recommendations. Men interested in bareback sex use a variety of defense mechanisms to account for, justify, and exonerate their behavior. HIV-prevention interventions have paid insufficient attention to libidinal drives, a crucial element of psychological functioning. I'd be willing to guess that most guys fetishize it though which can be evident in the terminology used. I don't think there is any bad reason for or against enjoying it, and simple personal choice is just as fine. They are not believed to provide much protection against most STIs and are really more of a contraceptive. As I understand that's why they fell out of use. I have heard that if contraception is your main goal they are much better than latex/poly options sensation-wise. Because part of the function of the guts is adsorb nutrients they are not a perfect barrier especially for very small viruses. I read a really good piece of journalism a few years ago about the history of the condom and the reasons why they suck so much. It talked about how during the AIDS crisis the FDA et al realized they should probably regulate these as medical devices so just sort of arbitrarily made up a bunch of rules and tests by which to evaluate how well they worked. I wish I could find the piece. As I recall one of the tests was to fill the condom with 1L of water and if any water leaked out it was considered to be too permeable to offer protection from HIV. Which is a really ridiculous idea; wtf. And prevents the manufacture of well-fitting condoms for guys with smaller cocks. The whole thing was basically about the train wreck of regulations developed by people who really didn't know how to think about what they were doing. I can't find it tho. Flu is more dangerous than chlamydia but I don't wear a respirator every time I go out in public. Any human interaction could potentially lead to communicable disease, that's just part of nature.
