As far as I can tell, gentrification is the main culprit. It was silicon valley companies in South Bay that caused the housing demand in SF to shift. They later moved more and more offices to SF. If you kick people out of their homes with an illegal Ellis act eviction (in use increasingly since the 90s) due to the city's real estate scams and they can't find am affordable place to live, turns out they either become homeless, need to commit crime in order to survive or move to areas where crime is profitable for both cops and citizens, or just get forced to move to Portland or some place else they can afford to live. Pre pandemic most of tech had kicked a large portion of people living there who had made the city what it was. Then during the pandemic, the techies all bought miniMansions in other states for a few months rent SF equivalent as the down payment and the others who had lived there before couldn't return because housing owners wont cater housing costs to minimum wage earners. Many rentable places in SF now sit unoccupied. A documentary SF2.0 is worth watching because what happens to SF will happen anywhere there's tech. The highest concentration of trump voters in SF live in the eureka valley directly behind the Castro, ever hard at work with their fascistic political habits making life harder for anyone in the city who isn't white with a Stanford Diploma like themselves. Statistically there are less out cruising gays in the tech work force, plenty of closet cases hounding trans women on Grindr though. Most of tech is conservative straight on paper and many tech bros wouldn't risk the biscuit with cruising trade. Many people of color I speak to say that white people do not provide enough room for them in the bars in the Castro. And if they wanted to open their own establishments, a certain real estate owner keeps businesses in the Castro empty as a tax write off. The owner of Eros building died and his son forced the bathhouse out to a new location by quadrupling the rent. The tenderloin is in the state it's in because it's always been a target by the city due to black and brown owned businesses and building there. Decades ago, the city routed cable car traffic out which as much as they wouldn't admit in public statements, they knew it would starve the area of its cashflow. Now the TL is a mix of good people indoors and good people who need medical attention they can't afford dying and shitting on the sidewalk. When you're rich you can afford back surgery and your parents help you out when you have schizophrenia. When you're anything but rich, the more medical attention you require, the more all you can afford is alcohol and opiates, starting with pain pills prescribed in a doctor's office by a physician influenced by companies owned by the Sackler Family which is the gateway to fentanyl, which numbs your broken back that Medi-Cal won't entirely heal due to it's shitty physical therapy coverage, and also numbs the pain of having the capitalism choke you nonconsensually for reaources. These are the people you're stepping over and yeah a dollar won't help them, they need money from the US defense budget allocated to heal them and bring them to a better place, which we all should take back. The majority of the blue collar work force lives in East Bay and frequent steamworks if anything, or private house/hotel parties. A large amount of the gay population is also on meth and that only makes things more hostile as it's a stimulant that eventually effects your ability to feel happiness naturally. Any political opposition to the way things are is usually left wing only not bipartisan and left wing blue collar workers are too beaten down emotionally by the uneven amount of work they need to do to make their utopia, so the loving creative vibrance that gay cruising spots should ideally be full of year round only really reaches that level around pride week. That said SF bay area is a giant indoor outdoor bathhouse, especially outdoors at Buena Vista Park year round, and whatever you find that's missing in the community is a chore, duty, and responsibility for you to add to it yourself. Most likely, you're too beat down by the fascist, capitalistic American way of life for that to be easy for you but I do believe that even with all that around it's still possible to build up our community with effort, action and communication. Don't believe me? That's fine, anyone who's lived here long enough finds this out eventually. Or they don't.
