Finding a doctor that prescribes PrEP

It's not unusual for a GP or Internal Medicine doc not to be up to date on PrEP, mine wasn't. When I met with her I had already researched PrEP on the CDC website and had red several articles: some in the gay media and others in the straight media. When my doc professed her general ignorance, I quickly brought her up to speed. She was impressed and thanked me for the info. She then asked if it was ok for her to consult with their ID specialist. (I get my medical work done st Stanford University Med Center.) I welcomed the opportunity. The ID specialist asked to meet with me for a one time consult, asked a number of Qs and prescribed PrEP. (My HIV tests (both), STD tests and other blood work had already been completed and was negative. My GP now handles the routine 3-6 month follow-ups and will be prescribing my future PrEP prescription. I have now been on PrEP for 5 months and have already had one 3 month follow-up (w/accompanying blood tests. My insurance company covers the Truvada, leaving me with a $35 monthly co-pay. -

Hungry, you really need to go on an all out campaign to find and get on PrEP. As jtonic suggests, it appears to be available at some locals w/in Canada. in the US, PrEP has been available for the past couple of years (approved by the FDA) and is covered by almost all insurance companies. I have been on it for 3 months and like most folk have had no side effects (and i'm hardly a youngee). -

If you are in the U.S. and Bareback regularly, or plan to, you need to talk to your doc and get on PrEP. This is particularly the case if you bottom. I've been on PrEP for the past 6 weeks and have a lot less anxiety when I take it raw.

Met w/my doc 7 weeks ago and told her I believed I should go on PrEP as I had been having raw sex with guys for some time. I educated myself on the topic well in advance (CDC website, friends on PrEP, articles from Gay community publications, etc). She admitted she was not up to date on the subject but complimented me on my research and knowledge. She asked if it was ok for her to query the infectious disease/HIV specialist (I get my medical work done at Stanford University Medical Center). The specialist asked me to visit him for a one time consult. After a couple of Qs he agreed I was a good candidate for PrEP and prescribed it. (I had already gotten all the requisite blood tests: HIV, STDs, kidney panel, etc). I pay $35.00 for a month's supply of PrEP. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO. I have been on PrEP for a month with no adverse affects. Provides peace of mind!

Yup, gay vers here but prefer to bottom raw. Started on Prep 8 days ago. No side effects. Has relieved some of the stress about taking raw loads.
