No there is no reason as an aircraft engineer you would be disqualified. Further, there are more than a few HIV+ commercial pilots out there, and it is not a disqualification as long as your treatment doesnt affect your judgement. There are LOTS of HIV+ people in the aviation industry, (flight attendants anyone??) and as long as it doesn't affect your performance you are fine. Modern treatment as rendered HIV a chronic manageable condition, not a deadly one. That being said this ONLY applies to the USA. I dont now the rules for other countries and they may very well vary. Also I wouldnt even bother asking before you apply. You dont want your name out there as HIV+ before you try. There still can be discrimination. As long as you are healthy and on the appropriate treatment I would broach the subject when you need too. Here is a very wordy version of the rules from the FAA for US pilots. http://www.pilotfriend.com/aeromed/medical/hiv.htm

For the guys in the US that think its inevitable they become POZ, you should all really think about and hopefully go on PrEP. With PrEP there is little reason you HAVE to become poz even with continuing much of the same activity. Its not 100% effective, but its more effective against HIV than condoms are.... Food for thought.
-
Why not go on PrEP? aging with HIV can be a bitch even if its controlled. Why not stay neg instead? with PrEP its a very good chance you will.
-
BINGO. I have some friends who play bare, and are ambivalent about PrEP, which I dont get at all.
-
I agree. assuring your neg is easy enough with any clinic visit, but you would need at least an initial blood panel workup too if you went this route. Interestingly enough one of my poz friends said its likely that for poz people they will be doing away with three month checks soon, and moving to yearly checks as long as there are no reported side effects, I would assume PrEP would be the same if that happens. Not sure how I feel about it, but I guess treatment has come a long way.

Preaching to the choir! My three month check is on friday just like clockwork.

HIV - is the message getting through?
wood replied to rangus's topic in HIV/AIDS & Sexual Health Issues
Well ironically I completely agree with this. Many people today, especially young people are VERY naive about HIV. I've even had conversations with a few guys that I know bareback about PrEP, saying that its very effective, and a great way to stay neg. Even then about 50% of them are unsure, and say things like "I think i will be okay" and "I don't like taking pills if I dont have to" Even more ironic is that in both cases they were gay black men where the infection rate in that community is roughly 50%. I think that for more than a few guys they either a) just dont care, or are completely apathetic to the whole thing. They see HIV as a more manageable diabetes, or high blood pressure, not something that can kill. Even more so I think that many of the guys underestimate the stigma that HIV causes. I know more than a few guys who would never seriously date an HIV+ person, and that really limits options. Many of the HIV+ undetectable guys I meet say are actually surprised I take it in as much stride as I do, and they are really happy to meet a neg guy who isnt afraid of them. But until they are infected it seems many guys dont understand HIV is still a lot more than a pill a day. Infact even with treatment, and good health over 75% of HIV+ men will still develop PCP pneumonia at some point... something that is rare in HIV- people in good health. -

Yeah you need to get on PrEP asap. look there is nothing "wrong" with you, or the feelings you are having its very normal. However, not taking proacive steps is how you get infected and live with it forever. If you dont want to make things public feel free to PM me with your location, age, etc, and I can help guide you to getting on PrEP. I dont need your name or anything like that. -
not quite. The studies so far have shown that PrEP taken on average 4 times a week, has efficacy in the 92-96% range. When taken everyday as it should be, efficacy was estimated at over 99% effective because no one converted in the studies.

bearbandit who posts here a lot is going to be your best source of info on here about PrEP in the UK and Ireland. Personally I know its not available yet, but its under study in the UK. I don't know what that means for Ireland. Now, I don't know if you can buy drugs online in the UK, but it is possible to get a generic version of Truvada called Tenvir-EM. Its made by Cipla which is one of the only W.H.O. certified manufacturers of generic HIV medication. Simply put, you can trust it. If I was without coverage in someway for PrEP, I would buy Tenvir-EM online.

This is one of the issues now with PrEP. Sure If I dont use a condom you can say I'm having "unprotected sex" but to what extent is that true with a guy on PrEP. Im dating an undetectable HIV+ guy right now, and we have sex without condoms. We have both been tested for other STI's. He's on treatment, Im on PrEP, so how is that "unprotected" sex?

This has been proven false. In fact over time unless your condom usage is 100% they have been shown to provide almost little value in stopping HIV. Simply put inconsistent usage is almost the same as no usage overtime, you are just delaying the inevitable. Now that doesnt mean everyone will become positive, its just that condoms have to be used consistantly to be effective. This is why I went on PrEP. its more effective, and easier for me to manage.
-
I agree with this 100% However IMO, if he is about to start PrEP, I would probably stop bottoming at all until I started it. Since I started PrEP, I have found I am actually more comfortable fucking undetectable guys than most "neg" guys simple because many of the neg guys dont get tested on a regular basis.
-
Just wait for PrEP, and heres why. It sounds like you want to stay negative, good choice. Now while the risk with undetectable guys is low, its not zero, and viral load can vary, especially when other illnesses are common, like now with cold and flu season. The biggest issue I have with you doing it now is that you would probably kick yourself forever if you got infected a month before starting PrEP because you didnt want to want, and while that risk is low, its still much higher than without PrEP. Undetectable+neg guy on PrEP means almost impossible transmission, while just undetectable depending on all what happens may be 1-2% chance. Just wait, or see if you can start PrEP sooner.

Or sometimes they are drawn out and painful. I had a friend die this past summer. He was 27. He was probably infected around 20, and NEVER got treatment. For the last three years of his life he was always sick, and tired. Eventually in mid april his mom came to his apartment and pulled him out. 6' guy weighed about 110lbs. It was then that they discovered he also had a massive brain tumor probably brought out by his almost complete lack of an immune system. He was dead by July. Im sorry but who in their right mind wants to go that way!?!?!?!
-
EXACTLY. I had a friend who said he got it from sucking dick, IMO cause he didnt want to tell his BF at the time, he was out getting fucked, when he pretended to be all top. While not as insignificant as oral, topping is also less risk, and I find it amusing that more than a few guys will also claim they got it from topping, only to find out later they bottom often.

Get him on PrEP asap. Thats what I am doing in my relationship, Im neg on PrEP, and poz undetectable. With that combo there is almost zero risk. I posed that exact question at thebody.org, and heres what I got in response, (mind you this is from a doctor with a masters in public health) http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SafeSex/Q232644.html Long story short, I have not problem having condomless sex with him, and I enjoy every moment of it.
-
bingo, Im in this exact situation we are both vers, he's undetectable, on meds, very healthy, I'm neg on PrEP. Even experts in this situation say the chance of infection in this situation is close to zero. Without chance your risk is higher, but not super high, more like 1 in 500, where as with a guy with a high viral load you are looking at 1 in 20 if not more. Go to the PrEP forum and read up, its what you need, especially if you think you are going to be seeing this guy for a long time.
-
My main opinion is first and foremost do no harm, so dont infect them. However, you also have to take into account how likely an infection is. For example right now I am dating a HIV+ undetectable guy, I am Neg and on PrEP. We are both vers and fuck each other without condoms. For me I have no desire to become HIV+, but I am no qualms about messing around with him because statistically the risk is so low, lower in fact than if I was not on PrEP and using condoms. With all that said I dont know what "very HIV+" means, its it means you have a high VL, and you are not on meds, I wouldn't do it, IMO its wrong, and there are plenty of guys who are poz out there to fuck. Also you can also run into legal issues with some guys possibly claiming you lied, or mislead them. Mixed emotions, and feelings of regret are common after being diagnosed. Personally I think you are risking a lot of trouble going after the bug chasing boys. IMO much of it is fantasy until reality hits. Also you lived through the worst of HIV/AIDS, do you really want to give it to someone else?
-
Okay, so heres the thing, you dont trust it, so you want a different answer, the problem is there isnt a different answer. Point blank people died in droves in the 80's and 90s from the disease you have, and you will too without help from the medical community, whether you trust it or not. Do you understand that? Not only that opportunistic infections are not just colds and flu's. My good friend who was just diagnosed poz last year, and he caught it very early, developed a cancerous anal lesion during that time due to his compromised immune system. Luckily it was caught early, and simple laser treatment worked. However, how happy would you be living out your days sick and without the ability to have sex due to anal cancer, all because you refuse to take pills or trust the medical community. Pretty silly IMO. Also as it was stated before, all you are doing is committing passive suicide through a long and painful process. Good luck to you, but I have little hope unless you change your thinking.

New, More Aggressive Strains Of HIV
wood replied to rawTOP's topic in HIV/AIDS & Sexual Health Issues
You know.. I'm trying to take you seriously and I'm thinking now that I shouldn't. You not only are not a "voice of reason" you also have no idea what the hell you are talking about. I work in public health and your fear mongering that you call education does NOTHING to help or inform people. Your "information" and ideas are wrong and or don't work. Lastly despite what you think its people like you that actually hurt the cause by pretending that existing and older ideas work, despite being proven otherwise. and honestly if you want to look at HIV from a purely epidemiological point of view the simple and easy way to stop the spread is to quarantine and kill the people who have the virus, not let them in the general population, oh wait that would be you....
