Many of us in the US received a fairly unbalanced public-school education, which infamously elided over numerous uncomfortable historical facts of US history. I ran across a short series on Netflix a while ago, and finally found it again. It's an informative-yet-entertaining bit of scholarship about how this amendment came to be, what it intended, how it became useful in later generations, and as we know, it is the basis for the Privacy Rights that are becoming more and more important to our peculiar interests every day. The title is: Amend: the fight for America, and lays bare in an honest way why we have a number of problems here in the US, why we still have them, and does so in a clear, non-judgemental way. For our friends elsewhere in the world who are wondering what those crazy Americans are doing to themselves lately, this would provide an understanding. This series is follows the history of it's intent, how it's been used, and how tenuous the lynchpin we all depend on actually is. At the least, it's better than listening to all the yammering by the correspondents and talking heads on tv, going over the latest poll, the latest insults of which candidates, blah blah blah. However: if anyone decides to watch it, you tv won't bring it up until after you VOTE.

Before responding, allow me to refine the definitions a bit: I think of someone as a "friend" when I feel close to them, they feel close to me, the friendship exists on a deeper level than - oh, say - fuckbuddies. So there's this used furniture store right next to the Ramrod. It's in a fairly small 2-storey building, fairly long and skinny, which - if the furniture store failed, the location would be perfect for an abs with darkroom setup. If I may: Yes, they are public, in the sense that any guy with id and the dough to get in, can. They are open only to the members, which members are there to fuck each other. and there's no chance anyone that doesn't belong there can access it. The topic has come up in conversations (friends, neighbors, acquaintances), and I can understand how guys who have "lived the life" for decades are concerned. The question, however, remains, move to where? Toronto? That would be the most-close to our way of life, but there are no guarantees that if our Democracy fails things will be much better there. That would mean many of us would have to learn a new language, uproot everything, and jump into a completely new life, without knowing for sure whether it would be successful. It's really difficult to see through the haze of the potential threats at this point, so I advocate for waiting to see what happens in the next 3-5 years. Make preparations if one wants to, sure; no harm there. I would imagine that if worse comes to worse, the repressions would start with the kids, as a "preventative" measure, leaving the already long-term Free men to simply fade away. Until whatever is coming actually happens, it's really tough to see through the seething pot of flux. At this point, there are only differing theories - of which, only one will prove true. Stirring the pot too much before it's ready only dissipates some of the heat, it doesn't affect the flavor of the outcome.
