It should go without saying that a mortality rate of 3.5% is terrifyingly high. A one in thirty chance of death! Combined with an expectation that between 30 and 70% of most populations will get infected with COVID-19, this means 1 to 2.5% of a country's population would die. That would be between 3 and 8 million Americans dead.

For those who are not yet socially distancing from others, there are confirmed reports of several governments (eg South Korea, Switzerland) using cellphone metadata to see if people are following the order. So imagine hearing a knock at the door and it's someone telling you they have evidence...and are issuing you a fine.

I have hard time understanding human behaviour. Gays have bareback sex without fear of HIV infection but scared of coronavirus. Even with the science behind ART risk of infection still exists. Still we in gay community bareback and those getting infected are saying that it's not a death sentence etc. With the same logic coronavirus too is not a death sentence in many individuals except with underlying conditions which is true for HIV as well. Then why is this scare? Just curious that's it. Not interested in starting a debate just sciences please.

1. Because Covid-19 is far more contagious than HIV and can therefore spread very fast.

2. Because with a hospitalization rate of 20%, Covid-19 has the potential to completely overwhelm the healthcare system (as has already happened in Italy).

It's not just gay people who need to be avoiding contact. It's everyone. I did the math yesterday for the US (based on CDC numbers) and if we don't slow it down, we could easily have 40 million cases by the end of April. I know that sounds ridiculous, but honestly, that's the way the math works out. 😕

The CDC has determined that an HIV+ person with a durably Undetectable viral load and consistently compliant with ART treatment cannot infect anyone else with HIV. Even if an HIV+ person does have a transmissible viral load, the chances of becoming infected from a single encounter are actually quite low.

None of this is true with Covid-19. Infected persons appear to be infectious to others early in their infection before any sign of symptoms, the virus appears to be relatively aggressively infectious, and you don’t even have to touch another person to pass it on - you can pick it up off a surface they touched up to three days prior, and you can get it if they carelessly cough or sneeze within three feet of you. And that’s just what little science has figured out so far. They’re mostly desperately relying on educated guesswork to get by at the moment.

The issue with HIV is not underlying conditions. HIV creates the condition - the destruction of your immune system - that then allows opportunistic pathogens you could normally resist to attack you with deadly force.

With Covid-19, persons with competent immune systems and robust respiratory systems appear able to resist the virus with only mild to moderate effects no worse than a cold or mild flu. But persons who already have weakened defenses, and especially those susceptible to respiratory distress, are less equipped to stave off this virus, with deadly results.

With HIV, we can say ‘no longer a death sentence’ because science has produced medicines to hold the HIV virus at bay. With this coronavirus, there is no medicine to hold it at bay, and there may not be any for months.

That’s why this scare. Because people are dying and at this moment we can’t stop it. Comparisons to HIV are no longer relevant.

Secondly, I can't speak for everyone, but I have NOT stopped having sex because I'm "afraid" of catching it myself - I feel it's the socially responsible thing to do....slowing the curve etc so we don't overwhelm the healthcare system - which is already too late in some areas.  I haven't fucked in 3 weeks now and some days I get SOOOOO tempted.  I usually have sex 2-3 times per week.  I'v been hit up by 5 different bottoms this week by text.  2 of them came out of the woodwork (haven't fucked in quite a few months), so I guess they're scrolling their phone to find cock.  I'm vers, so my personal observation is tops have more self control than bottoms LOL.

It's very different than the HIV scare in the 80s.  At that time I was genuinely AFRAID to get it MYSELF.   In the beginning it didn't even have a name and we didn't know HOW it spread but we knew (at the time) that it was pretty much 100% mortality rate.  I came out in 1985, and for probably 15 years I assumed AIDS would be how I died.  I understand why people make a comparison, but it's really very different.  The ease of transmission for corona and how fast it's covered the globe, knocking out the healthcare system and global economy (including my own business - 100% closed down) are why I've quit having sex to do "my part".

I'm not afraid of catching it myself - that was almost everyone's attitude a few weeks ago, and I'd say almost everyone I know still feels that way.   At this point I don't even think anyone still thinks this is going to go away.....all it takes is ONE person to start the spread again.  Most people I know are trying their best to do their part in slowing it down, but I have learned that there will ALWAYS be people who genuinely don't care about anyone but themselves, so this will probably never actually go away 😞

102 years ago it was the US government who did it and we wound up killing 2.7% of the people around the globe (1 in every 37 people!). The Spanish Flu originated in Kansas and was spread around the globe by the US military. Our military was warned by health experts to do certain things and they repeatedly ignored the advice and did them anyway. We also suppressed information in the name of "we're fighting a war and don't want our enemy to know how this is affecting us" (the very same excuse our military used to suppress information a day or two ago).

So as Americans it's not our place to judge the Chinese government. About the furthest we can go is to say "We made that same mistake 102 years ago. It turned out horribly. If only people would learn from history and follow the advice of experts."

I hear you, and figured they were trying to figure out what the hell was going on.  Also, it's an authoritarian country so I didn't expect them being that open--about anything.  Who I AM pissed at is our "leadership" who has lied about absolutely everything about this.  Two months ago it was a hoax, 6 weeks ago it was a personal attack on him, last week we're told everything's fine and we should plan on going out and partying our asses off for Easter.  Until YESTERDAY he hasn't fully allowed himself see or understand what a world of medical and scientists have been repeating since January.  I won't go into dismantling 2 years ago the program created precisely to prepare and protect us.  "HE" owns this and the blood on his hands.  I liked it better when he was just fucking whores.

This social distancing thing is getting challenging. Cooping up inside my home with not much to do really makes me horny all the time.
