As @Sfmike64 mentioned, ramping up vaccine production isn't simple. One of the reasons why we don't have vaccines is because the manufacturer started making them in a new plant and the US didn't inspect and approve the production at the plant quickly enough. So there are millions (?) of doses that we've purchased that are just sitting in a warehouse. As soon as we approve the production from that plant they can be shipped to the US. It's a huge failure on the part of the Biden administration, but at the same time we want safeguards like that to be in place.

I think they're also talking about licensing the process of creating the vaccine to US drug/vaccine manufacturers in case it becomes a wider problem and the manufacturer can't produce as many doses as we need. But nothing about that is simple either.

That plant you're talking about in Denmark has now been inspected by the FDA (late July) and is approved to ship vaccine doses to the US.

The vaccine that I received in New Orleans (got my 2nd dose last Tuesday, Aug 23) was made by this Danish company, Bavarian Nordic.

I hate to be a spoilsport, but a vaccine taken today will only be very partially effective by the weekend - something on the order of 50% for HIV-negative guys (if I remember correctly) and even less for guys who are HIV+, even those who are undetectable. Not sure of your HIV status, but I wouldn't count on a Tuesday shot offering significant protection by Friday night.

Those doggone facts...  LOL

Glad you got the first shot.  Sorry that we're in this crazy time of exposures again.  If it is your intention to avoid getting mpox, I would wait until at least two weeks after your second mpox vaccination.

I assume, though, if the worst happens, it should reduce the severity of the symptoms. I am basing this assumption of the fact that there is a push to vaccinate people who have been exposed to the virus.

I'm not sure it's so much symptom-lessening as it is "this guy has already had one exposure, his behavior indicates he could be exposed again, so he's higher-risk and should be prioritized for vaccination."

Vaccines are almost always prioritized on the basis of risk. That's not to say it won't ALSO reduce symptoms but I don't think that's the targeting reason.

NYC has announced that second doses will be available to people at risk with the first shot done. Problem is - as recommended at 4 weeks after first one, NYC has it set for 10 weeks+.

That makes it available to me personally end of November. And I keep seeing posts on hookup sites that (local NY) vaxed people list they are already double-vaxed. Have other states kept the recommended vax protocol at 4 weeks' gap?

Respectfully I disagree.

This is Capitalism in action, where a thing is only made when there is a demand for it, from people who can afford it; If I'd put it as black-and-white as you yourself do.
Only then production starts, which takes time. If you want to make a car, first you have to build te factory. Vaccines need production facilities and capacity just the same.

I'm not a Socialist nor am I a Communist but at least these are philosophies, capitalism as such is not as it's only the absence of rules and limitations set on human greed where only the rich and strong flourish.
We need a middle or the road approach, which we are doing in the best way we can.

I'd like to add that if the rest of the world had helped earlier outbreaks of monkeypox in the parts of Africa where it was already endemic, we wouldn't be in this mess we're in now.

So you haven't gotten your first shot yet despite the fact that they're now allowing walk-ins?

If you got your first shot today, you could get your second shot November 11. So your saying "end of November" means you weren't planning on getting your first shot until about 2 weeks from now. Why are you putting it off?

And I know some conservatives like to label everything they don't like "porn" or "socialism" but waiting 10 weeks isn't actually a problem - in fact it may be better.

For starters, as I posted in a response above, you can get the 2nd shot any time in the first two years and have pretty much the same level of protection. That's according to the CEO of the company that makes the vaccine - and he's also a virologist. So who gives a shit when you get the 2nd shot? I mean you're complaining about something that's not really a problem.

Second, places that made people wait longer periods for their 2nd COVID shot saw better, not worse, immune responses. There's every possibility that the same could be true of MPX (though I can't point to any study to prove it).

NYC has been pretty smart about their rollout of the vaccine. We have one of the best health systems in the country, if not the world. On this particular topic you don't know better than they do. They're not putting your health at risk.

I'm eligible for my 2nd dose in 9 days. The time passes pretty quickly.

I am timing pretty closely with you rawTOP.  I know the place I normally go to for vaccinations likes 4 weeks between shots of any sort.  With the new updated covid vaccine out shortly, I am planning a conversation about timing.  I would like the new covid shot as soon as available, even if I have to wait some time before #2 mpox.  And of course soon the annual flu vaccine will be out.

My intent it to see if they'll be open to 3 week timer.

I remember when the UK decided (on the basis of science, I might add) to extend the gap between the first and second COVID shots by a few weeks, and the shock horror it caused round the world: “Oh, those crazy Brits- they’re at it again… first Brexit, now this 🤪

Turns out it produced a much better outcome, and soon everyone was doing it.

Am I worried that the UK is currently prioritizing first doses, and has no schedule for the second? No, not one bit.

Equally respectfully - things in NYC are different from the textbook scenario you have described. Maybe you haven't finished reading the article.

Monkey vax in NYC is free - 0 cost to the recipient - courtesy of NYC government. Your private or personal health insurance is not required.

Free government service as a product (even though I as a resident pay city income and sales taxes etc, etc) or free health care is factually socialism. That's how that statement is made. Your access to that service is not based on citizenship, "papers" or legal status - not required. Illegal residents who in the past got city-issued "NYC.ID" that is mandated acceptable for NYC city government services can get that service and be vaccinated with what some capitalist enterprise did in fact create at cost and basing on demand for people who can afford it.

Indeed, if the same government (or the feds actually) cared enough about its people, the vaccine would have not been stored in Europe but stateside in US. It's just that they got lax since the last cases were in late 70s-early 80's. Early on I had a very distinct impression from hysteria in national press that this is yet another gay-centric disease, and gays are the only ones getting it that this is again are the early days of a new AIDS crisis.

Thank you kindly, I already have my first dose.
But I'll pass on medical advice from someone like you until the time you get your own MD license.

Comparison between COVID immune response and one from any pox is at minimum speculative (if that someone was a medical specialist) and flat out irresponsible when you're not. There is a ton of comorbidities and factors that was involved with either disease, and any individual human has his own response, as everyone's health is different.

I've had COVID even with vaccine and booster done - don't preach to me about labels.

If waiting 2 years is better than 4 weeks as the manufacturer specified, why wouldn't you wait those 2 years to get the best overwhelming immune defense ever?? Yet you counted the 9 gleeful days that are remaining for you. Do you have an appointment or you'd take your chances with a walk-in inquiry? This shit is just rife with hypocrisy.

It turns to end of November for me because I am out of state at the time when my 10 weeks make me eligible. And when I am back, having an appointment proved that it takes 2 weeks between booking and coming in person. There are no walk-ins advertised for the second doses - you have to have an appointment that NY State makes.

I'm anticipating a surge in cases as parties are in full swing in NYC and pride events happening in ATL this weekend.

Cases in the UK have slowed, if not declined, according to latest government information, despite the number of Pride events through the summer. Hopefully that will be the case in NYC as well.,
