I agree because I never intended to say that poppers themselves helps HIV infection. I also think it's mostly luck. I have barebacked as a bottom for more than 15 years, some of those years taking hundreds of anonymous loads a year, and my last test is still HIV-neg. I also wish I were immune but most likely it's been circumstantial. Maybe if a bottom sniffs poppers while getting fucked it becomes easier for the HIV virus to enter the blood stream. I think that poptronic is dealing with his situation as newly pozzed extremely well. Because the 19 year old is so emotionally unstable and unpredictable it may be a better idea to be nice to him and support him until his blood test for HIV comes back negative after the 3 months window period. Then, disconnect yourself from him, but not before you know with total certainty that he is HIV-negative. I don't agree with the use of the term "gay" other than when referring to self-identity ("I am gay") because in most cases the correct and more accurate term is "all-male" or "men who have sex with men." I'm loving the book "Unlimited Intimacy" by Tim Dean but I don't understand why he keeps referring to "gay men" when he talks about men who have sex with men. What about someone like poptronic who recently tested poz and has to deal with not only his family but his girlfriend. He's not a "gay man." I've been having all kinds of sex with men and no sex with women and I don't consider myself a "gay man" either. For starters, I don't feel any different from any other man or boy when I was a boy myself. I grew up as a regular boy and never doubting my identity as a boy because I saw myself just like a regular boy. So I can't identify myself with a group of men who claim to have been "different" from the other boys. Hence, I couldn't say I'm gay. I have never felt oppressed or humiliated about my identity when I was growing up so I can't relate to this aspect of "being gay" either. Using "all-male" is more appropriate because it's inclusive. An "all-male sauna" is for bisexual men, bicurious men, gay men, men with fetishes, men who don't identify themselves with any of the sexual identities, men who were too drunk, etc. An all-male sauna is for men and the men who go to these saunas are men who like having sex with men or watching it, cruising with other men, etc. In his book Tim Dean keeps using "gay men" instead of men who have sex with men (MSM) but at the same time he's concerned that barebacking is tainting the reputation of the gay identity. If he only stopped using "gay men" to refer to men who have sex with men then the reputation of the gay identity would be unaffected.

This is a tough one. Part of the problem that poptronic is having is a consequence of living in a society that does not accept male homoeroticism as normal but as a deviation left for those called "gay men". Contrary to what most people think, male-male sex should be part of the normal behavior of all men instead of sex between men seen as appropriate only for the men who are "weak", those who are not "real men." Women believe this crap and because they have very little sexual interest in other women they assume that the so-called heterosexual men have absolutely no interest in other men, only in women. When women learn that "their" man has been having sex with other men they feel inadequate for attracting a man who is not a "real man." I wouldn't know what to do in this situation because there are two issues: having sex with men and being infected with HIV. One possibility is to talk only about having sex with men but not the HIV. But this only if you are sure the girlfriend is OK.

Young people are too concerned about their reputation and how other people view them. I would have never been able to do sexual stuff that I do now when I was younger. Although I live in Canada and have a good drug plan, I can totally identify with the panic that poptronic is feeling. I would probably feel the same way because I don't want and I don't chase HIV.
