I met a guy years ago in Greenwich, London who was exactly like that. My initial reaction was identical to yours. But then I realised it was how he got his jollies, so I met him a few times - mainly because he was quite hot. I used the money to pay my phone bill because younger guys, now able to use apps, have no idea how expensive those bloody chat lines were back in the day. -

I’ve made contact with a couple of really great BZ members individually on Telegram but haven’t really come across any groups. Someone did add me to one once - I can’t now recall what it was - but it was a tad dull.

It goes without saying to keep your passport, money etc secure. I’ve never felt unsafe down there but there have been occasional reports of muggings. That awareness goes for London as a whole. In fact, I feel safer in New York than I do in London these days.

The train into Kings Cross takes an hour, then the Northern Line on the Underground to Hampstead. Getting there should be no problem for you. Getting back is a greater challenge if you’re doing it by train, unless you spend all night there and wait for the Tube/trains to start running again. I have done that in the past. It’s knackering but the Heath can still be active at 4am…

I think those of us not from the States are already bemused by the tipping culture without an added complication. I love the States and adore New York - I’m back there in a few weeks - but visits are usually tinged with a worry about tipping: is it enough? What’s 20% of that bill? Should it be more…? 😬 Seriously, I’m not sure what to advise though I’m minded to think I’d probably handle it the same way and not tip if I felt it was unfair or gratuitous.

I saw it first on a Transatlantic flight, too. Then again, some months later. I can’t honestly say if they were different versions, although it didn’t really hold my attention the second time and I wasn’t fully concentrating.

That’s really interesting about Sheffield because pre-2020 they really were worth the journey. But it was actually promoted back then. Times change, I guess.

They tried it twice in Manchester and both times it was a flaccid affair. In contrast, the Sheffield ones (just over the Pennines) were great. At least, pre-Covid - I haven’t been since. Of course, Manchester was notoriously pretty much bareback city before it became more mainstream, so that might explain the failure. When your unique selling point isn’t unique, it’s a pretty uphill battle to make a success.
